More from Panera

Here is a Photoshop painting from last week's sketch session at a Panera bread. I did it in color, then I played with a black and white gradient on an adjustment layer and liked both images.

Panera Bread sketches

Here are some sketches I did yesterday from a Panera Bread near my house.

I'm working on a digital painting from the same session that I will try to post soon too.

Dragon Practice

Been drawing a lot from How to Train Your Dragon over the first few days of winter break. I love that movie - I've watched it about six times in the last three days and I'm sad every time it's over - and I love the character designs of Nico Marlet so I decided to do a bunch of studies of the film. There will be more from the movie later (and Ima draw from Kung Fu Panda at some point), but here is the first batch practice drawings from the movie.

Project Dunc-nasty

Sooooo... here is everything I have for the last animatic. I apologize that it's not totally done, but I think part of my lesson for this class was learning how much time particular things (like nice-looking animatics) truly take.

Anyway, I will take my lumps. I am happy with the look and feel of the project.

Here it is:

Another Bites the Dust!

Here is my final for my character design class. Bernadine is a character I would like to work more with in the future.

Project Duncan Next to Last Update Oh My God

Ok. So. Things are crazy. Moving as fast as I can. A lot left to do and soooooo little time to do it. Gantt Chart = mess, but progress is happening. Below are about half of the total poses for the hunter. I plan to finish them and then import backgrounds, hunter, etc. into Storyboard Pro to "compile" each scene.

The Roth Lion

Below is my most recent character design homework, we drew celebrity names and then had to make an animal caricature out of them. I drew Tim Roth, therefore we now have the Roth Lion:

The Holidays are here....

One of my classes went to the Franklin Park Conservatory to draw yesterday. I just felt like posting this super quick "sketch and paint" of one of their Christmas displays. Drew the sketch on site, did the painting in Photoshop (instead of real homework....ahhhhh!).

My Sad Sad Project Duncan Update

So here is my update....namely a number of backgrounds. To re-hash, I will be (hopefully) finishing a bunch of the assets (backgrounds, character expressions, drawings, etc.) and then putting them all back together in a much fancier version of the animatic from Project Ron Saks. Sigh...here they are.

Ocho Hombres

El Hombre is another assignment from Character Design class; we had to create a co-star to go with our last character (see Dutch below), I chose a guy to go with "Gaucho Dutch". He is "El Hombre" and he is either Pancho to Dutch's Don Qixote or perhaps the Jaba to Dutch's Han Solo. Haven't decided. Anyhoo... here he is, in eight color variations.

Some Faces

Since the last time I posted was before Thanksgiving and I'm basically just working on stuff for final projects I figured I'd throw some sketches up here to keep the content rolling.

These are just some quick color pencil drawings of people on campus.

Nine plus one Dutches

These are from a pair of assignments in my character design class - first came the character, then came a ton of different costumes for said character. His name is Dutch.

The original (I was definitely inspired by the Derp Derp blog for this drawing):

 And nine more...

Project Duncan Update

So, I settled on a look for my final iteration of the "Tom V Squirrel" animatic. It's not quite black and white but it's definitely not full color either. I've also been cutting some things down, namely the long walk through the woods at the intro. I am also considering one last change to the hunter character, a before and after is included below.

Bernadine!!

This is her first appearance but it will not be her last! She is based off my lovely wife, Jenny.

Escape from Crow City

This is the animatic for my final project in my Animation One class at CCAD. Actually pretty excited about it as I'm starting to get a grasp on Storyboard Pro. Yay.

Project Duncan Proposal

Okay, so after the long fight of finishing a rough animatic for my animated short, "Tom v Squirrel", I very much considered using this project to try something different. However, after some time to consider (and Charlotte's advice) I have decided instead to push the animatic to the next phase for project Duncan. In short, the proposal is simple: clean up, beautify and refine.

Below I have included a Gantt Chart for how I intend to break down my workflow.

After working in Storyboard Pro - and frankly struggling mightily for a few weeks - I found the way I like in the program, namely drawing the images in Photoshop, saving them as .png files with translucent backgrounds and importing them into Storyboard Pro. Then I can have a look I like while using all the bells and whistles of the storyboarding program.

Here I have included some stills from my Animation 1 animatic where I used the aforementioned method. I'm much happier with the aesthetic of the project and think I could use it to create a portfolio-worthy animatic out of Tom v Squirrel.

Project Ron Saks = done

So....continuing from last week's entry, I stuck it out and actually finished a VERY ROUGH version of the animatic. But it's done, so without further ado....

Birds Ya'll

Just did these for a cafe sketch assignment. Thought I would post them here as well. I drew them in pencil and colored them in Photoshop.

Bog's Room 2: with characters

This is the finished piece from the same project, we had to work in a group to come up with a movie idea- plot, characters and some beat boards to show characters interacting in their environment. Mine includes an angry Bog, Cammie (my group's main character) and her companion, Oote, the owl.

Project Ron Saks: update for Oct. 27

Sooo... after a general feeling of disinterest had crept over me regarding my animatic (it was, in general, too static), I went through a massive overhaul of the story:

That was the scene last Thursday evening in my work room. I hung a bunch of sheets on the wall and re-drew my entire piece with the help of my lovely wife (who added invaluable suggestions).

I then thumbnailed it out in my sketchbook, then went to Charlotte for help with one final iteration of the thumbnails.

The good news is that I finally feel like I have a piece with enough movement and comedic punch to satisfy me, the bad news is that the following animatic and storyboard pdf are not quite finished (but they do cover about half the piece).

Here is the link to the pdf:

And here is the animatic:

BOG!

This is a preview of tonight's character design class. We had a group project, there were seven of us and each of us had to develop a character from a story we created together. My character is the "physical threat". He is a weary man by day, but that is not his true self.

Animation....to SOUNDS

Latest animation. Sadly, not totally done. But still happy with it.'

Oh, yeah. Please watch all the way through...because it disappears for a few seconds in the middle there, but there is more at the end!!

DANCERS!

Did these at the Ballet Met yesterday. Just posted them on my Cafe Sketch blog, but I was really happy with them so I'm posting them here too.

Project Ron Saks update!

So, this time I planned ahead further and got a Quicktime movie exported of my animatic. Soooo ... here it is:

Dropping in the sketch bomb!

Most of these are from my cafe sketch class, but I thought I'd share them:
